Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU)

The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit at Oshawa Hospital provides timely, specialized clinical and psychological support for stable patients who are experiencing complications in early pregnancy, such as ectopic pregnancy, bleeding or suspected miscarriage. These patients would normally be seen in the Emergency Department (ED).

Almost 90 per cent of patients with early pregnancy complications are discharged home after their ED visit. However, many of these patients return to the ED for ongoing care. Approximately half of Ontario’s EDs have access to early pregnancy assessment services, Lakeridge Health is responding to this patient need.

The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit provides patients a comprehensive assessment including diagnostic imaging and blood work as needed. The unit also supports patients in the event of potential or confirmed pregnancy loss. A team of nurses, physicians and social workers provide holistic care to families.

Access is by referral only. Download the referral form.
